Guess who’s in the CG business? Ross Video

David Ross

Walking into the Ross Video’s booth at the NAB Show April 21, I was a bit surprised to see the company was in the character generator business.

The company was enjoying a sizable crowd of people looking at its new XPression character generator. The CG’s introduction into the Ross Video family of products is the result of Ross’s March acquisition of Media Refinery. Well-known in Europe, the character generator is new to the Americas and the rest of the world.

I spoke with David Ross, CEO and owner of Ross Video about the character generator and the company’s other new NAB introductions. That interview is presented as a podcast.

New digital TV transmitter

rs-scx8000.jpgRohde & Schwarz SCx8000

While many US broadcasters have already built much of their digital plant, the need for lower power gap-filler and fully ATSC mobile TV compatible is growing. This is where the new Rohde & Schwarz SCx8000 transmitter fits in. This transmitter is designed for low- to medium-power market segments and is fully compatible with digital TV standards such as ATSC, ATSC Mobile DTV, DVB-T, DVB-H and MediaFLO.

The compact design of the R&S SCx8000 means a smaller footprint in the transmitter building. The unit uses a novel module-based air-cooling concept that avoids the need for a central rack cooling system. It uses an integrated RF splitter and combiner solution in the amplifier modules, resulting in less need for component real estate. more…

Value is key to gaining customers says company

At a press breakfast Tuesday morning, Avid officials at times sounded contrite about the company’s previous behavior. Even so, to a person, they were always enthusiastic about the company’s future plans.

Kirk has been busy reorganizing, rebranding and, in general, helping refocus the company on products and customers. The company is coming together with a one core theme, “Avid is Back.
