Axcera presents ATSC Mobile DTV education session

At the Axcera booth this morning, I got to sit in on a tutorial session entitled “ATSC Mobile DTV Transmission Systems,” presented by Rich Schwarz, Axcera VP of product management. Acknowledging that mobile DTV offers a new revenue opportunity for broadcasters, Schwarz discussed alternative choices available to convert existing transmission facilities to incorporate ATSC Mobile DTV. He presented options for exciter conversion, multiplexing, single-frequency networks, coverage and power level considerations for mobile versus fixed reception, as well as all the components of the transmission system that are affected.


After the session, attendees were able to view a live, over-the-air demonstration of ATSC Mobile DTV. The demonstration encompassed a complete, end-to-end transmission solution, including Axcera’s new ATSC M/H Pre-Processor/Multiplexer, its Axciter ATSC exciter-modulator for ATSC M/H, along with mobile content encoding and ESG equipement, and consumer receivers.


Axcera’s new ATSC M/H Pre-Processor/Multiplexer was designed specifically to combine terrestrial and mobile content into a single transport stream. The output feeds an ATSC broadcast transmitter that includes Axcera’s Axciter adaptive digital television modulator, which is designed to retrofit existing transmitters — regardless of manufacturer — to be ATSC Mobile DTV capable.
