Capitol Broadcasting’s Goodmon is bullish on over-the-air broadcasting
The best is yet to come for broadcasters thanks to the DTV transition.
That’s the view of Jim Goodman, president and CEO of Capitol Broadcasting, owner of DTV pioneer WRAL-TV in Raleigh-Durham, NC. Goodmon made an appearance at Harris Broadcast’s 2009 NAB Show press conference to explain how the station is on the air today demonstrating the viability of mobile DTV, both technically and economically.
The station is conducting a trial of mobile DTV to simulcast WRAL to city busses equipped with mobile DTV receivers and flat panel screens. During his comments, Goodmon drew a few laughs by reminding everyone in attendance that when it comes to mobile DTV broadcasting “the main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.”
What is that main thing? That over the air broadcast is an exceptional vehicle to help advertisers sell their goods and services, and mobile DTV is a powerful way to reach viewers anywhere in a DMA with free, appealing content.
After the press conference, I spoke with Goodmon and asked him to elaborate on his views about the future of over-the-air broadcasting and mobile DTV.
