TANDBERG Television shows new encoders

TANDBERG Television is demonstrating the latest generation MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 AVC encoding for SD and HD television, IP statistical multiplexing and IP streaming as part of its iSIS 8000 IP head-end solution for broadcast applications. DVB-T, DVB-T2 and DVB-H video streams can be processed in the same head-end providing the efficiencies of IP transport for all current and future over-the-air broadcast services.

In Europe, broadcasters desiring HDTV deployments are focusing on a new generation of DTT technology provided within the latest DVB-T2 standard. While these solutions, should reach the market by late 2009 and early 2010, broadcasters need to be ready to deliver more video, in more formats, and in the most efficient way possible.

TANDBERG remains confident that more compression efficiencies can be achieved with MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 AVC moving forwards both for SD and HD. Further improvement in both codecs will greatly benefit the DTT market and the long-term importance of MPEG-2 for DTT must not be underestimated, according to company officials.

Stand demonstrations include: the iSIS 8000 IP head-end, which combines encoding with TANDBERG Television’s MX8400 multiplexer, a multi-transport dense IP statistical multiplexer that supports both SFN (Single Frequency Network) and IP streaming adaptation. The MX8400 supports all codec formats, and can provide not only seamless IP connectivity but also DVB ASI.

For head-end monitoring, particularly of advanced codecs, the company’s RX1290 multiformat receiver/decoder decodes MPEG-2 in SD and HD, and MPEG-4 AVC in SD and HD, can downconvert HD to SD and combines IP/ASI inputs with SDI/ASI output.

The TANDBERG solutions are being shown on stand 1.D61.
