Four new one hour programs produced from scratch and three movies processed in just three weeks with Quantel Stereo3D technology
London-based Can Communicate is nearing completion of a challenging Stereo3D project for the UK’s Channel 4 Television. The project involves the complete production of four one hour Stereo3D programs, and also the processing of three full length Stereo3D movies. Two of the documentaries go under the banner ‘The Queen in 3D’ and feature footage shot in the last couple of months as well as rare Stereo3D footage from ‘Royal Review’ which was shot on film in 1953 at the Coronation. The latter is being aired in public for the very first time, having languished deep in the BFI archive for the last 50 years. Both films are co-productions with Renegade Pictures. All the Stereo3D correction and grading is being carried out on Can Communicate’s Quantel Pablo color correction and more

Customer focused approach brings outstanding performance in tough market conditions
Quantel today announced its provisional results for its 2008/9 financial year, which ended on 30th September 2009. In some of the toughest market conditions around the world for many years and while some competitors are reporting losses, Quantel increased its turnover by 12% and reported its best operating profit since the company’s Management Buyout in 2000. Quantel also announced that it is currently seeking to recruit 20 graduate-level staff. World’s leading TV shopping channel looks to the future with Quantel
QVC UK, part of the world-leading television shopping network, has just gone live with a Quantel Enterprise sQ server-based production system, providing a totally integrated production and playout environment. The new system forms the backbone of QVC UK’s entire promotions production operation, fully integrated with a custom developed scheduling, automation and asset management solution (named ‘QSAAM’ by QVC) from Japanese company NSD.
The sQ server at the heart of the system is configured with 220 hours of IMX50 storage, and supports nine of Quantel’s sQ View, sQ Cut and sQ Edit desktop applications as well as three eQ finishing systems. Two further sQ servers provide fully redundant playout. QVC has also added three Quantel Power Portals to the system to give interactive connectivity with its archive.
New possibilities and efficiencies for broadcast content creators and distributors
IBC, Amsterdam, 11 September 2009: At IBC Quantel demonstrated three new extensions to the sQ server system architecture: Virtualisation, an Open Identity Model and Web Services. Building upon the already class-leading video and file-based workflows of the sQ architecture, the extensions deliver new workflow opportunities, greatly increase customer choice and dramatically simplify the integration and management challenge of file-based operations.
The new capabilities are open and inclusive enabling Quantel, its customers and 3rd parties to build new co-operative workflows using modern IT technologies and standards.
These new architecture components are not pie-in-the-sky futures, they are real developments that today enable Final Cut Pro to offer true broadcast workflow when partnered with sQ systems (see separate release) as well as remote working (see below). This is only the beginning; in the future these building blocks will underpin more
Now Final Cut Pro users can enjoy all the benefits of the fast sQ server workflow
At IBC 2009, Quantel demonstrated complete integration of Apple’s Final Cut Pro into the Quantel sQ server News and Sports production environment. Final Cut Pro on Quantel is shipping now.
A new Quantel Final Cut Pro Gateway enables Final Cut Pro to be totally integrated into the sQ workflow in the same way as Quantel’s own editors. All the usual Quantel workflow benefits and speed to playout are available but now with Final Cut Pro - there are no compromises.
Workflow advantages of the Quantel Final Cut Pro integration are:
* Ability to edit expanding clips on Final Cut Pro - editing of clips that are still being recorded
* Finished edits are published instantly - edits can be played out the second they are finished
EVS and Quantel have announced advanced production workflow integration between the two companies’ production systems. This has been made possible by the recent adoption of the Panasonic DVCPRO HD Codec by EVS, which is now natively supported by EVS production servers and by Quantel’s new file system virtualisation technology. Integrated workflows featuring file interchange between the EVS XS server controlled by IPDirector and Quantel sQ production systems was demonstrated at the Quantel booth during IBC2009.
The recently released native support of the Panasonic DVCPRO HD codec by EVS enables its production servers, such as the XT[2] and the XS, to offer extended workflow capabilities and smoother content exchange with Quantel sQ production systems. The exchange between EVS and Quantel is based on MXF OP1A file transfer, which can be managed manually or automatically depending on the system configuration.
Quantel will be showing its range of post, DI and broadcast systems on its new, more environmentally friendly stand at IBC 2009. The emphasis is firmly on innovative new technologies that create better workflows, contain costs and streamline production timescales.
Get Real – Go Virtual
At IBC we’ll be introducing virtualisation and showcasing its benefits for broadcast file-based workflows. Virtual files eliminate typical file-based workflow issues such as latency and managing multiple versions and help file-based operation achieve its full potential. Our new virtualisation technology makes the impossible possible.
Visitors are encouraged to come and see what we mean in our broadcast theatre on the stand. To be sure of being able to get to see it, broadcasters should drop marketing@quantel.com an email with their preferred day and time and we’ll reserve and confirm their seat right away.
New developments in post production, broadcast and Stereo3D on show
Quantel announced today that it will be exhibiting at IBC 2009. The stand will highlight the latest developments across Quantel’s range of post production, broadcast and Stereo3D systems.
“We’re all very much looking forward to many positive meetings with our customers and prospects at the show,” said Steve Owen, Quantel Director of Marketing. “In coming to our decision to participate at IBC, we took account of our customers’ wishes, who’ve all expressed a desire to meet with Quantel at the show. We will be showing and discussing some important new developments that are just now finding their way out of our R&D lab. more
