THE COUNTDOWN FOR THE EURO 2008 HAS STARTED AT ORF

orf_mc290.JPGToronto, Ontario, Canada – May 30, 2008… The qualified European teams have been named and the nominated players are preparing in their training camps for the European soccer championship. Also, the teams in the sports studio control room RP11* of the Austrian broadcaster ORF have completed numerous training units for this major sports event – the EURO in their home country.

With the start of the European championship, the ORF will go on air in HDTV, which has necessitated a complete rebuilt of the sports studio in Vienna as well as the installation of state-of-the-art technology. In the course of these alterations, the SCR RP11 was fitted with an mc²90 digital console from Lawo.

Right after delivery of the audio mixing console at the end of February, the first training sessions took place in March. In the meantime, the ORF has prepared everything for the Big Day. The “hot” trial run in HDTV for the video and sound control room has been going on all through May with simulated TV programs and the preparation for different situations. The sound engineers and technicians have established settings and configurations, and they have created their setups and stored them. Also, the workplaces of the editors in the team are now completely set.

Shortly before the EURO 2008 kickoff, on June 1st, the ORF will go on air with their traditional Sunday sports program “Sport am Sonntag” using their new studio—for the first time—live in HDTV. After this test match, it is all plain sailing for the HDTV live coverage of the EURO 2008.

* The studio control room RP11 is centrally situated in a studio complex of the ORF that consists of several small studios, amongst them a bluebox studio, a virtual studio, and a studio with furniture. All studios are connected with this control room, making this a most flexible studio – control room environment.
