Zaxcom Debuts New High-Resolution Audio Mixer, Recorder

Fusion Blends Power Efficiency, Light Weight, High-Quality Audio Mixing and Recording Into a Single Solid-State Solution

POMPTON PLAINS, N.J. — April 8, 2007 – Zaxcom, a pioneering provider of professional audio equipment for the television and film industries, today introduced the Fusion high-resolution audio mixer and recorder. Optimized for reality television, surround recording, and ENG applications, Fusion is both lightweight and power efficient. With no moving parts, Zaxcom‘s Fusion provides a truly rugged, solid-state solution for audio professionals who require an all-in-one system for mixing and recording.

“Fusion reduces weight and complexity by providing a direct replacement for the multiple mixers and portable recorders typically used to mix audio for recording to cameras via RF link or hardwire,” said Glenn Sanders, president of Zaxcom. “With its multitrack capabilities and eight output busses, our new system is also an ideal fit for supporting the new HD cameras that feature more than two tracks of audio. Fusion is an exciting development for us, and we‘re thrilled to begin shipping it to the professional audio industry.”

Fusion accomplishes its low weight and superior power efficiency by eliminating the use of a hard drive. This has the added benefit of removing concerns of hard drive damage from extreme temperatures or motion. The system instead records to two CompactFlash cards simultaneously, ensuring 100 percent solid state recording that provides both redundancy and flexibility. For fault-tolerant recording, the Fusion records to one card in the mobile audio recording format (MARF), which allows audio to be recovered even if power is lost during recording. Simultaneously, Fusion records a redundant copy of the audio files in the FAT32 format to the second CompactFlash card, creating an easy way for the post-production team to have immediate, portable access to the files.

Designed to bring high performance to the field, Zaxcom‘s Fusion provides DSP-based audio tools that are currently available only in studio equipment. Fusion includes an integrated, lockable touch screen interface that provides fast, powerful access to all of the system‘s mixing and recording functions. Fusion users can adjust over 300 mixer cross points and 200 controllable parameters. Four balanced AES inputs with sample rate conversion allow eight channels of audio to come from four different devices with varying sample rates or unlocked sample rate clocks. Fusion can mix together 16 inputs to eight output busses for recording up to eight tracks. The system additionally works as a FireWire® bus master to control and supply power to external hard drives or DVD-RAM drives.

Fusion also offers an optional effects package that is unrivaled in portable audio systems. Each channel can feature a soft knee compressor, high-pass filter, delay, and 3-band EQ with peak or shelving filters. The system includes six filters per channel, with frequency-selectable high pass filters included and optional EQ and notch filters.
