Green studio lighting, Part 1

green-lighting.jpgWhen it comes to saving money, broadcasters are not much different from the average consumer. They say, “sign me up.” It’s the details that matter. For broadcasters, maximum operational savings (OPEX) typically first come from installing a new transmitter. The power saving from a new solid-state or liquid-cooled transmitter is typically significant. With increased efficiency, the ROI on a new transmitter may be as little as three years. But, given that most U.S. broadcasters have already invested in new transmission technology, where else can a TV station engineer look to save money? Begin with lighting. more

Spectrum theft update

stealing-spectrum1.jpgThe commission issued a Public Notice on Dec. 2, “Data sought on uses of spectrum.” The notice reinforces the commission’s plan to “repurpose” large blocks of spectrum from someone, anyone and everyone. However, as the notice makes clear, it’s OTA television spectrum that the commission is seeking to grab. If that’s not sufficient to scare you, then consider that the comment closing date is Dec. 21. more

I’m stealing your spectrum

DTV to become AM radio?

am-radio.jpgBroadcasters must be feeling a bit abused. After spending billions to upgrade facilities, buy new transmitters and antennas and install HD, it appears the FCC now plans on reducing them to the equivalent of AM radio.


Under the warm and fuzzy banner of “broadband for all,” Obama’s FCC has targeted the OTA television spectrum as ripe for picking. Setting the stage for this theft is Mr. “I’m going to take your frequency” Blair Levin, the FCC’s executive director, Omnibus Broadband Initiative. His Nov. 5 blog post reveals not only where he (and Genachowski) clearly plan on going, but his justification to put you out of business. Below is a portion of his Nov. 5 post. more
