Tech vendor successfully transmits full HD over a 4.5 MHz channel

NovelSat Ltd., a provider of modulation technology for satellite communications, has announced that live testing of its NS3 modulation technology has demonstrated that HD channels can be broadcast using minimal bandwidth space, making it ideal for the smaller vehicles be used for digital satellite news gathering (DSNG).

NovelSat has shown that high-quality HTDV and 3DTV video channels can be delivered over standard 4.5 MHz and 9 MHz transponder slots.

The Israeli company said that its lab tests could result in significant ROI for the industry, including cost savings due to 47 percent less bandwidth consumption; HD-quality transmission over standard-definition infrastructure; simultaneous streaming of video and data enabled by dynamic bandwidth allocation to prioritize the video; and he use of 35 percent smaller antennas (DSNG and flyaway kits). NAB 2012 In The Books

Last week’s NAB show was attended by 91,932 professionals from the worldwide broadcast and professional video production industries, up about 4.5 percent from the 88,044 that gathered in 2011. Dennis Wharton, the NAB’s Executive Vice President of Media Relations, said that an estimated $30 billion in commerce was generated by the show including the business done on the exhibit hall floor by the 1,600 exhibitors occupying 815,000 net square feet of exhibit space. The NAB Show has attracted more than 110,000 people in its heyday in 2007.

“The economy is getting better and the financial outlook for the broadcast industry in general, reflected by this year’s extremely positive show, is improving as well,” Wharton said, alluding to the increase this year in exhibitor participation and an almost 10 percent increase in size (up from 1,550 exhibitors occupying 745,000 net square feet) from 2011. Cameron Pace Group beats the 3-D drum for primetime episodics

At last week’s NAB Show in Las Vegas, James Cameron, the renown film director and 3-D guru, continued to ignore the “the doubters, the naysayers and scoffers” and pushed for a 3-D production path he claimed will be profitable for broadcasters.

Vitec Group adds Camera Corps. to its product portfolio

In a move that adds remote, field-proven, POV-style camera and control systems to its video production product offerings, the Vitec Group’s Services Division has acquired the assets and technology patents of U.K.-based Camera Corps Ltd. Camera Corps will now become a wholly owned subsidiary of the company’s Vitec Videocom division.

This is becoming an NAB tradition. famed film director James Cameron and 3-D production pioneer Vince Pace are back at the show this year to talk about 3-D production in movies and sports. This time, however, the founders of the Cameron-Pace Group (CPG) are slated to show broadcasters how to make 3-D profitable.

CPG’s solutions are said to have supported more than 200 sports productions and dozens of feature films generating more than $8 billion in box office. Before the company was established, broadcasters were unable to make a viable business case for 3-D. That’s the lesson the folks at Digital Vision—a supplier of restoration, color grading, and mastering technology used in feature film and broadcast content creation—appear to have learned the hard way. After acquiring a motion analysis and film scanning company called Image Systems in 2010, and then completing the deal by last year’s NAB Show, the companies said it would use the “Image Systems” moniker and divide the combined organization into three business units—Media, Motion and Defense. Samsung places bet on new smart TVs

Earlier this month, Samsung held an event in New York City to show its new line of 2012 televisions, which are set to begin shipping by the summer. Not only are these not your grandfather’s television sets, they resemble computers more than any previous Samsung television sets to date.

3-D creativity comes to local on-air graphics

Chyron and Ventuz Technology AG, based in Germany, are working together to offer customers the ability to create interactive 3-D graphics for live on-air broadcast and corporate presentations.
